Naas hit by heavy snowfall

A scene in Naas this afternoon

Parts of County Kildare have seen a significant amount of snowfall this afternoon and Naas has been badly hit.

At least one and a half inches of snow has fallen in Naas since about 3pm.

The inclement weather appears to have taken many people by surprise - and caused cancellation of three inter county hurling league fixtures today.

Although Met Eireann had a status yellow weather warning in place for all of Leinster, it also indicated that significant accumulations of snow would be confined to higher ground.

Some of the ring roads around Naas, the town Centre and Kilcullen road were badly hit and are in a dangerous condition.

Traffic was reduced to crawl in some places as motorists struggled with the conditions, which happened on the anniversary of the so-called Beast from the East in 2018, which saw 44 centimetres of snow dumped on the Naas area.

The most recent Met Eireann forecast, released over an hour ago, predicts that “the last of the rain, sleet and snow will clear into the Irish Sea early tonight.”
