The car park at Abbey Street
You may think that dance has got it all covered by now.
You surely have at some time been dancing in the dark, dancing in the city, dancing in the moonlight or, in the Ireland of time gone by dancing in the hayshed (Patrick Kavanagh has a line about a dance in Billy Brennan’s barn tonight).
In Naas there’s a possibility that a public car park could become a dance venue.
But if it happens it won’t be till the summer comes and then, like the best of all entertainment attractions, it’ll be for a couple of nights only.
Naas politician Sorcha O’Neill wants to know when a planned upgrade of the Kildare County Council car park in the form of resurfacing and security cameras at Abbey Street will go ahead. The council will respond next week.
The independent councillor is part of the committee which organises the Midsummer Arts Festival on the last weekend in June in Naas and Sallins.
“We are looking at ways to utilise this space for the festival including an outdoor dance floor for tango dancing, Viennese waltzing and perhaps an outdoor night time cinema,” said Cllr O’Neill.
She added: “The condition of the car park will determine whether and what we can use it for.”
