The family of Newbridge’s Edel Slicker (née Delaney) recently presented a cheque for €10,600 to the Make A Wish Ireland charity.
The funds were raised at a memorial day for Edel on September 15 on the Curragh plains.
“The day was a huge success and a very appropriate tribute to Edel and epitomised what was important in Edel’s life — family, friendship, physical fitness, being active and sport,” said her family.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants, sponsors and those that made personal donations, and a big thank you to Brian Cambell and the staff of Permanent TSB, Newbridge for hosting the cyclathon fundraiser for us.”
“Your generosity ensured that Make A Wish received such a generous donation and also provided the much needed funds to help us actually host the event and make it the phenomenal success that it was.”
There was huge community spirit on the day with support from local organisations such as the Defence Forces, The Order of Malta, Scoil Bhride, Nurney; and Kildare Sports Partnership with many local businesses contributing.
There was also huge support from a group not so local — the Defence Forces in Lebanon, who organised their own ‘Day for Edel’ on September 15.
The family also thanked the many volunteers who helped in so many ways, big and small.
The concept of ‘A Day for Edel’ as a way of coming together to remember Edel originated from her family, but the day was certainly made more memorable and special by the huge support from everyone who participated, and supported them in the lead up.
“Without your help and support it would not have been possible to host the day or offer such a generous donation to a very worthy charity. Thanks for your continued support,” concluded her family.
