Weather alert until 9pm in County Kildare

Kildare County Council offices

A weather alert issued for a swathe of the country, including County Kildare, stays in place until later today.

Met Eireann issued the weather alert because of impending torrential rainfall affecting mainly Leinster and Munster counties and it holds until 9pm. County Kildare has been badly hit.

It says up to 40mm or rain, possibly more on higher ground, is expected as a weather system moved up from Munster. Drier weather will move down from the North as the day progresses.

The Status Yellow is less serious than Status Orange or Status Red and is a weather service warning to be aware.

Meanwhile Kildare County Council is asking motorists to avoid the road between Milltown and Newbridge; the Naas-Newbridge dual carriageway; the route between Rathangan and Allenwood and Grangeclare West, Kilmeague at the Motorworks garage.

The road between Rathbride Cross on the Curragh to Dunmurray Hill (on the way to Rathangan) is reported to be virtually impassable.

KCC says it is dealing with flooding issues on “a priority basis.”

KCC's emergency contact number is 1890 500333.
