Best in Farmers Market Award for Kildare

Bernard Gibney from Kildare town

A local food producer scooped the best in Farmers Market Award for County Kildare at the Irish Food Awards held recently.

Bernard Gibney who makes jams and chutneys and is a regular at the newly formed Made By Farmers Market in Kildare town.

Bernard, a former manager at Ted Baker in the Kildare Village, gave it all up to make locally sourced jams and relish in his own kitchen. Gibney Garden Jams to be precise.

Strawberry vodka lime jam, spiced rum, lemon marmalade, ghost chili ketchup, bloody Mary jam are just some of his uniqueproducts on offer.

“Sometimes what I will do is do something different - people like alcohol in the marmalade - so I keep it traditional, most of the recipes are from cook books - the ketchup recipe is over 100 years old - it's from America,” said Bernard.

“I look at other things like a cocktail or a desert combination - things that would go together traditionally but not in a jar.

“I'm looking for combination of flavours that would work well in a jam or a chutney. I am always looking to change it.

I love what I do - I'm much happier now and I have a great work life balance. If you can find something that you love doing and can get paid for it. We set up a new market called the Made By Market -its at the coach yard at Boyle’s Pub its on the last Sunday of every month from 1pm to 5pm.”
