Five trainee gardaí have reportedly been suspended for allegedly handcuffing another trainee and leaving him under a running shower in what has been described as "a prank that got out of hand", the Irish Mirror has reported on Saturday.

The media outlet have said that the incident is alleged to have occurred in the Garda Training College in Templemore, located in county Tipperary, within the past two weeks.

Michael O'Toole and Nicola Donnelly writing in the Irish Mirror have reported that the five trainees only received their handcuffs the day before.

A source told the outlet that this is allegedly not the first 'prank' played on the victim, who apparently only escaped the shower upon being discovered by another trainee.

There are a total of 350 trainees currently in the Garda College in Templemore in north Tipperary.

In a statement to the Irish Mirror on Friday evening, June 27, An Garda Síochána said: "An Garda Siochana does not comment on ongoing internal enquiries."
