Taoiseach set to 'intervene' as Irish woman has travel ban and faces charges in Dubai

In the Dáil today the Taoiseach, Simon Harris was made aware of a case of an Irish woman who is facing charges in Dubai and is under a travel ban.

The Taoiseach said he was previously unaware of the case of the Irish woman Tori Towey, who is 28 years old.

Leader of Sinn Féin Mary Lou McDonald brought the case up to the Taoiseach which she described as "the most gross domestic violence."

Deputy McDonald, who was speaking with the Roscommon woman earlier in the day said, "She has been the victim of the most gross domestic violence." "Her passport has been destroyed. There was a travel ban imposed on her."

"She had gone to the authorities seeking protection many times but to no avail." Added that Tori's husband had "slammed doors on her arms and break her limbs."

Tori Towey is facing charges "of attempted suicide and the abuse of alcohol" and Mary Lou McDonald added, "is now under the most incredible stress."

She then added that the case is "a matter of urgency" and that "She wants to come home."

The Taoiseach then responded by thanking the Deputy for bringing the case to his attention and said they will "intervene and see how we can support an Irish citizen in what sounds to be, based on what you tell me, the most appalling circumstances"

Myself and @ClaireKerrane raised the emergency case of Tori Towey with the Taoiseach seeking urgent intervention in her situation.

The system in Dubai, rather than protecting this Irish citizen chose to detain and charge her.

She wants to come home.
