BREAKING: Investigation underway after man arrested in Donegal dies in Garda station cell

The case was referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) after the man was found dead yesterday afternoon.

Investigation launched after man in custody in Donegal Garda station cell found dead

An investigation been launched by the Garda Ombudsman after a man was found dead in the cell of a Co Donegal Garda Station yesterday.

The man, who was in his 30s, was in custody after he was arrested earlier in the day on Thursday, and was taken to Buncrana Garda Station.

The man was later discovered unresponsive in the cell and urgent assistance was called for. Despite attempts to revive the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office confirmed the death of the man.

In a statement, gardaí said: "On the evening of Thursday 27th June 2024, a man in his 30s who was in Garda custody at a Garda Station in Donegal was discovered unresponsive in a cell and urgent assistance was requested".

"Despite resuscitative attempts by medical personnel and first responders who attended, this male was later pronounced deceased.

"As per Garda Policy this matter has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) under Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005."
