'Please exercise caution' - Gardaí catch over 1,300 motorists speeding in just 4 days

Gardaí have confirmed hundreds more motorists were caught speeding on the roads yesterday (October 29). 

The motorists were caught as part of An Garda Síochána's ongoing Bank Holiday Road Safety Operation, which is due to continue until 7am on Wednesday November 1. 

On Sunday, GoSafe checked 57,568 vehicles for speeding with a total of 324 detections. 

Notable detections yesterday include 118km/h in a 60km/h zone in Kildare, 177km/h in a 100km/h zone in Cavan, and 164km/h in a 120km/h zone in Kildare. 

Three hundred and forty four motorists were caught speeding on Saturday out of a total of 66,629 vehicles. 

Top speeds detected on Saturday include 121km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Limerick, 117km/h in an 80 km/h zone in Dublin, 145km/h in a 100 km/h zone in Kildare and 164km/h in a 120 km/h zone in Tipperary. 

On Friday (October 28), 353 vehicles were caught speeding out of 137,575 checked vehicles, while 302 motorists were found speeding out of 110,596 checked vehicles on Thursday (October 27), when the Bank Holiday safety campaign began. 

The figures for today (Bank Holiday Monday, October 30) have not yet been released. 

One hundred and fifty seven people have lost their lives on Irish roads so far this year, with two more fatalities recorded over the Bank Holiday weekend. 

In a post on X, Gardaí stated: "There is a higher risk of being in a fatal or serious road traffic collision on a Bank Holiday weekend so please exercise caution." 

They also issued the following appeal: "For whatever reason you will be using the roads this weekend, whatever your mode of transport may be, to stay safe on the roads this weekend."
