RIP: Motorsport Ireland confirms death of rally competitor following fatal collision

Motorsport Ireland has confirmed the death of a rally competitor aged in his 30s following a fatal collision today (September 24).

The organisation confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter) and extended its "deepest sympathies" to the family and friends of the deceased.

The tragic accident occurred this afternoon at approximately 1.30pm on the fourth stage of the Clare Stages Rally.

The driver of a second car also involved in the accident was transferred to University Hospital Limerick to receive treatment for injuries.

The road is currently closed and the scene of the collision is preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Traffic diversions are in place.

Mortorsport Ireland stated, "Motorsport Ireland also extends its sympathies to the members of Clare Motor Club and everyone involved with organising today's event who reacted so quickly and professionally to the incident.

"Motorsport Ireland and its affiliated clubs are recognised internationally for operating to the highest standards of motorsport safety for competitors and spectators in line with the best practice of the FIA."

Clare Motor Club has confirmed the event has been halted.

Anyone with any information on the collision is asked to contact Ennis Garda Station on 065 684 8100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

It marks the fourth road death in just 24 hours, after three people died in separate overnight collisions in Donegal, Dublin and Kerry.
