New O'Connell St station will improve citizen safety in the community - Gardaí

A new Garda station has been opened on O'Connell Street in Dublin with the aim of improving citizen safety in the area.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris opened the station this morning (Friday March 10) following renovation works undertaken by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in October last year.

The building will feature a public reception with adjacent interview rooms for members of the public to report crime or seek assistance.

The station also provides office space at ground and basement floors, as well as ancillary facilities including a meeting room, tea station, sanitary, storage and welfare facilities for Garda members.

Its opening hours will be between 8am to 2am daily and it will be staffed with one sergeant and four Gardaí.

There are reportedly no prisoner cells in the station and arrested people will be conveyed to the District Headquarters at Store Street Garda Station.

The permanent Garda station at 13 A O'Connell Street will provide support to Operation Citizen, the overarching Garda response to ensure high visibility, and a proactive response to anti-social behaviour and other crimes occurring in that area.

It will become a place where members of the public will have the opportunity to engage with members of An Garda Síochána for the purpose of reporting a crime, seeking advice and all of the other services that they may require will further enhance our present on the capital’s main thoroughfare.
