Teen in Kildare court for having a 70km/h e-scooter he 'got off Santa'

The garda said the offence occurred in Naas
A teenager has appeared at Naas District Court for using an electric scooter.
It is an offence for someone under the age of 16 to use an E-scooter in a public space.
The case was brought by Garda David Farragher following an offence at Naas East on September 9, 2025.
Sgt Mary Meade said the 15 year old boy was using a machine which weighed 37 kilograms and had a power rating of 2,000 watts - which exceeded the limits.
The court heard the defendant was riding the scooter but he was obliged to be over 16 years.
The scooter was capable of travelling at 70 km/h but its maximum speed should be 20 km/h.
“It is a technical offence,” said Sgt Meade, adding the device was seized.
Defending solicitor Joe Coonan said the boy’s mother was glad it was taken off him.
Mr Coonan said the teen got the scooter off Santa, to which Judge Desmond Zaidan replied “so you can blame his mother.”
The case was initially adjourned.
