Councillor says she is upset at being called a liar

A Kildare county councillor says she has been made to “look like a fool” and has lashed out at council officials.

The comments were made by Fianna Fáil politician Carmel Kelly, who criticised Kildare County Council staff for undertaking to do work - and then not doing it.

Cllr Kelly told a Naas Municipal District Committee meeting that she had received an email to the effect that double yellow lines would be provided at an address in August - but they didn’t materialise.

She said she was upset at being called a liar, after telling people the work would be undertaken.

“I’m really upset; I’m gone past angry (having) notified residents that the work would be done,” said Cllr Kelly.

She said, in apparent reference to KCC officials, she would “hang everyone out to dry.”

She added: “I’m being made to look like a fool; this has to stop.”

Cllr Kelly said that when projects are delayed or postponed indefinitely, KCC should tell the councillors about this.

According to KCC official David Creighton staff will endeavour to do this in “a timely fashion.”

He also said delays or postponements “can occur for a variety of reasons and at any time and can be outside the control of (the) staff.”
