A Rathangan man appeared at Naas District Court last Thursday, charged with driving offences after he collided with a patrol car.

Noel Shannon, 42, with an address listed in court documents as 9 Tannery Road, Tannery Wharf, Rathangan, pulled out of a minor road onto the Monasterevin Road, Rathangan on December 3, 2015 and clipped a Garda patrol car with the rear of his.

The court heard that he didn’t even know that he had hit the Garda car.

Gardai stopped him and initially checked to see if he was driving under the influence, which he was not.  He told Gardai he could not recall the incident, although he was cooperative with them.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning. Representing him, barrister Sarah Connolly said there was minor damage to the squad car.

Mr Shannon is a member of the Defence Forces and requires his license for work. Judge Desmond Zaidan asked the defendant if he appreciated the reality of driver fatigue and he said that he did. He imposed a €700 fine on the defendant.
