Prosperous is in shock this week following the discovery by a six year old girl of a bloody syringe.
The child found the needle in a public area in the Anne Street housing estate last Sunday, August 7. A resident of the estate said that locals have brought the matter to the attention of the Gardai and the County Council (Anne Street is a local authority estate).
Gardai are aware of the presence of a drug dealer in the area, and last Tuesday, August 2, searched a house where a quantity of heroin was found. A man was arrested and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
Anne Street is full of young families and is a lively estate with dozens of children and teenagers.
“There is an individual whom we are aware of, but there is not a huge drug problem in Anne Street,” a Gardai source said.
“This is not the first time a needle was found in this estate, and won’t be the last,” said a resident. “Most people are afraid to speak out because they fear for their childrens’ lives.” The resident was frustrated by the apparent lack of progress by authorities but a spokesperson for the Council said the matter is primarily one for the Gardai.
“If it is established that there is evidence, then the Council will take the appropriate action,” the spokesperson said. Local county councillor Brendan Weld said he was appalled by the news.
