THE award winning country singer Shania Twain may well have her roots firmly placed in Newbrige according to the Newbridge Mayor.
Mayor Damian Molyneaux annouced the revelation at this month’s Newbridge Town Council meeting.
“Shania Twain’s granny was from Newbridge,” he said. “I think her name was Pearse.”
Councillors failed to comment on the significance of the matter and moved swiftly on after it was agreed that it could be looked into. According to Wikipedia however, the Candian singer-songwriter’s maternal grandmother is called Eileen Pearse and did indeed emigrate from Newbridge. And the Grammy Award Winner was orginally named Eileen, presumbably after her Lilywhite granny.
Meanwhile for any Shania wanabees, a Glee Workshop will take place at Newbridge Library from 2 to 6 Auguust. The workshop which is for library members is free of charge and is for girls and boys aged 7 – 14yrs. It will run each morning 10.30am – 12.30pm. Participants will give a performance for family and friends on the last day.
