Laois Offaly Sinn Féin TD, Brian Stanley, is demanding the National Transport Authority provide a bus shelter in Monasterevin.
“At a time when we are trying to promote the use of public transport, the travelling public are entitled to expect basic facilities to protect them from the elements. With our inclement weather, having to stand at the side of the road in the cold wind and heavy rain is a strong deterrent for many who use bus services and this is simply not acceptable in a modern transport system,” he said.
“This is an extremely busy bus stop in Monasterevin and it is not uncommon to see 20 or more people waiting there for the bus.”
The Deputy continued; “We’re not talking about a large structure here, a simple inexpensive shelter would suffice. I have discussed this with the management of the National Transport Authority and emphasised to them the need to improve facilities to make it easier for public transport users and to encourage more of the public to take the bus.
“I’ve contacted the National Transport Authority to request the provision of a bus shelter in Monasterevin and for funding to be prioritised for this.”
There is currently no Bus Eireann service operating for Monasterevin, however, there are a number of private operators.
