Kildare County Council has granted a planning extension to the Whitewater Shopping Centre to demolish existing warehouse buildings on a site adjoining the rear of the centre to accommodate three retail units and an eight screen Mulitplex Cinema.
Permission was first granted in May 2009 for the retail units and the Multiplex cinema, which opened to the public as a six screen on the first floor in December 2009.
Prior to its opening, the developers behind the shopping centre had spent three years attempting to find an alternative location for the cinema, citing a desire to provide a bigger and better mulitplex cinema experience to customers. It caused some controversy at the time as concerned residents feared that the cinema would not be completed. The location of the cinema from the rear of the shopping centre back into the centre was described as ‘a temporary fix’ at the time until the economy picks up and funds became available to relocate to a site at the rear of the centre.
The development is located on a 0.43-hectare site adjoining the rear of the Whitewater Shopping Centre to the South and fronting Athgarvan Road and will involve the demolition of the existing warehouse buildings.
However, Paul Keogh of Ballymore Properties, the developers behind Whitewater said it was ‘simply a renewal of a planning permission’.
“In time we would like to see a phase two of Whitewater SC to take in all the derelict area at the back of the centre and maybe have a Waitrose, Donnybrook Fair or Super Valu connected to the car park with a insisting children’s entertainment area and maybe stay with our current cinema,” he said.
The planning permission also includes three retail units on ground floor level.
