White's Castle in Athy
Kildare County Council has proposed to develop a conservation plan for White’s Castle in Athy.
The issue was raised at this month’s municipal district meeting. Cllr Mark Wall asked for an up to date position with White's castle and if there are any plans
for its upkeep given its importance to the town.
Members heard from Town Manager Joe Boland that works involved in the preparation of this plan have been completed. This involved gaining access to the internal structure to assess its condition.
It is hoped to further progress the preparation of a conservation plan next year.
“I met with the owner,” said town manager Joe Boland. “It is in private ownership and the owner has no immediate plans for the castle. We did discuss the use of the space in terms of economic, cultural and touristic value to the town.”
Cllr Wall said it could be used for a Christmas market.
