A €4.9 million redevelopment of the Lidl supermarket in Newbridge has been proposed, with plans set to significantly expand and modernise the existing store on Athgarvan Road.
The application to Kildare Co Council outlines the demolition of the current single-storey discount foodstore, which has a gross floor area of 1,746 square metres.
In its place, the company wants to build a larger, part single and part two-storey supermarket extending to 2,556 square metres.
The new store would include an increased retail sales area, growing from 1,286 square metres to 1,742 square metres, alongside an off-licence section. Plans also feature a mono-pitch roof and an internal mezzanine plant deck.
In addition to the new building, the proposed development involves a full reconfiguration of the site layout.
This includes changes to vehicular and pedestrian access, upgraded car parking facilities, and improvements to both hard and soft landscaping.
Further elements of the project include new signage, a trolley bay enclosure, and upgraded refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Infrastructure improvements are also planned, such as the installation of an electricity substation, public lighting, and electric vehicle charging points.
Sustainability features form part of the proposal, with roof-mounted solar panels and enhanced cycle parking facilities included in the design.
The plans also provide for updates to drainage and utility connections, as well as waste storage facilities.
If approved, the development would represent a substantial investment in retail infrastructure in Newbridge, replacing the existing Lidl store with a significantly larger and more modern premises.
