A €686,000 retail development has been proposed for Edmund Rice Square in Athy, as plans are lodged for a substantial extension to an existing commercial premises in the Co Kildare town.
The application, submitted on January 27 by John Pettitt Wexford Ltd., outlines the demolition of 94 square metres of existing storage and cold room structures at the site of Pettitt's SuperValu.
In their place, developers are seeking permission to construct a new 222 square metre two-storey northern extension to accommodate upgraded stockroom and cold room facilities.
In addition, the plans include the construction of a separate 140 square metre two-storey southern extension, which will provide for an expanded off-licence area alongside new staff amenities. #
A full upgrade of all building façades is also proposed as part of the development, along with associated site works.

Design and planning services for the project are being led by Michael Sheridan Engineering & Design Ltd.
The privately funded project has a total proposed floor area of 362 square metres on a site spanning approximately 0.56 hectares.
If approved, the extension is expected to enhance retail capacity and improve staff facilities at the Athy location, supporting ongoing commercial activity in the area.
