Temporary traffic lights sought for this Kildare region

A local councillor urged Kildare County Council (KCC) to install temporary traffic lights in one County Kildare region while in attendance at a recent KCC meeting.

The request was put forward by Fine Gael Cllr Tim Durkan at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, February 6 last, in which he urged KCC to provide the temporary set of lights at Griffin Rath in Maynooth — specifically, on the recently opened ring road.

According to Cllr Durkan, he wanted this done in order "to ensure a safe crossing for pedestrians until the permanent lights are installed as part of the Eastern Orbital Route".

His motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Pádraig McEvoy.

Responding to Cllr Durkan's motion via the report it presented at the meeting, KCC said: "There are two uncontrolled crossings along this stretch of road, and it is not proposed to provide temporary traffic lights in the short term due to the relatively low volume of traffic on the road and pedestrian usage at present."

"This can be reviewed over the coming weeks and re-assessed if needs be."

KCC also told Cllr Durkan that the contractor for the Maynooth Eastern Ring Road will be carrying out works in this area in due course, and asserted that "all required traffic management will be in place to allow the safe completion of these works".

Furthermore, a KCC official who was also present at the meeting, Mark McLoughlin, told Cllr Durkan: "All we can do at the moment is keep the area under review.

However, he assured Cllr Durkan: "We will certainly look at it and look at traffic calming measures."

Mr McLoughlin also said that he would meet Cllr Durkan on site to discuss the matter further.
