Details of investment relating to a cemetery based in County Kildare have been revealed by Kildare County Council (KCC).

The information was provided to the Mayor of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD), Fianna Fáil councillor Noel Heavey, at the latest MD meeting, which took place on Wednesday, January 21 last.

Near the end of this meeting, Mayor Heavey motioned for KCC to provide details of investment in Barrettstown Cemetery over the past six years.

His motion was seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer.

In response, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "Barrettstown is a small older cemetery, which is at capacity."

KCC added: "Works to remove trees and shrubbery were carried out in recent years to create additional space, totalling €36,200."

Speaking further on the motion, Mayor Heavey described the cemetery as "a place that is very precious for a lot of people".

He also told KCC: "I would ask for the idea of single plots [at this cemetery] to be taken onboard."

Replying to the suggestion, a representative of KCC who was also present at the meeting said that they noted Mayor Heavey's request and that they would look into the matter further for him.
