A total road closure proposed by Uisce Éireann (UE) was questioned at a recent Kildare County Council (KCC) meeting.

The query was brought to KCC’s attention by Social Democrats councillor Claire O’Rourke at the latest Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District meeting, which was held on Friday, January 16 last.

She asked KCC: "Can KCC give a technical rationale for UE’s proposal for a period of total road closure on the Maynooth Road near Crodaun instead of the previously agreed Stop / Go System, and if there is another technical solution to avoid the closure of this arterial road?"

In response, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The UE project team has indicated that the initial proposal of a traffic shuttle system was in the absence of detailed typographical and ground investigation surveys."

KCC added: "Following the completion of slit trenching, borehole surveys and typographical surveys, the extent of the presence of rock below the road surface and the available works area was established; this resulted in a re-assessment of construction techniques and plant required and the determination that a full closure was required."

Cllr O’Rourke subsequently told KCC that she accepted the report.
