Upcoming improvement works will make one South Kildare town "more accessible, safer, and welcoming", according to one county councillor.

As explained by Fine Gael Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, work is set to begin on the much-anticipated path improvement project for Kilcullen, which has been in Kildare County Council's schedule of planned works since 2023.

Kildare County Council previously advertised the works, which will begin at the River Café and continue to the entrance of Kilcullen Square, on December 16 last.

"This transformation has been a long time coming and will make our town more accessible, safer, and welcoming for locals and visitors alike," Cllr O'Dwyer added.

She also explained that the new project will result in the provision of brand-new footpaths enhanced safety features (such as the provision of a brand-new pedestrian crossing near the Town Hall), fresh road resurfacing and new line markings.

'INCREDIBLE VISION'

Cllr O'Dwyer said that the upcoming project "is the result of the incredible vision and foresight of the Kilcullen Community Action Group".

Commending the group, she said: "Their dedication to improving our town laid the foundation for these works.

Cllr O'Dwyer further said that while locals will experience "some short-term inconvenience", she stressed her view that the long-term benefits would be "worth it".

"This project will transform our streetscape, encouraging visitors to stop, explore, and enjoy Kilcullen’s many attractions and local businesses," she added.

Cllr O'Dwyer concluded: "Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to make Kilcullen even better!"

The works in Kilcullen will commence on Monday, January 12, 2026, with an estimated completion date listed as May 29, 2026.

As for the traffic management measures, a Stop / Go system will be in place for the duration of the works.

It should be noted that some delays are to be expected.
