Recently on the N7 in Co Kildare, Naas Roads Policing Unit detected the driver of a HGV holding a mobile phone directly in front of their line of sight while travelling on a three-lane dual carriageway.

The motorist received:

  • Three penalty points

  • €120 Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN)

According to An Garda Síochána Kildare, mobile phones are the number one distraction on Irish roads, with driver distraction being a factor in 20-30% of all collisions in Ireland.

Why it’s so dangerous:

  • Even a quick glance takes your eyes off the road

  • Reaction times slow dramatically

  • Increased risk of lane drifting, missed hazards, or failing to stop in time

The message from An Garda Síochána is clear: “Your mobile phone — would it kill you to put it away? Arrive alive. Phone away. No message is worth a life.”
