This Kildare town 'cannot take much more housing'

Sallins primary school 'is full'

Proposals to provide more housing in Sallins have been criticised.

“Sallins can’t take much more development,” said Cllr Bill Clear, at a Naas Municipal District committee meeting.

He said that there are no places for people wishing to go on a GP patient list, there is no second level school and the primary school is full.

He said these issues are creating a “large deficit” adding “we have to start putting proper facilities in place.” 

He said development levies paid by developers as part of planning permissions "should be ringfenced for Sallins.”

According to Kildare County Council, it was originally planned to provide 174 housing units there as part of the Kildare County Development Plan 2023-2029.

But housing growth requirement guidelines, issued this year, proposes some 250 units in Sallins - in addition to the 174 units. 

KCC official Jane O’Reilly said the proposed increase “will be considered by KCC” in January and the final figure agreed by the councillors “will inform the preparation of a new (housing) plan for Sallins.”
