A TD based in North Kildare has vowed to assist a Kildare-based domestic violence support service.

Fianna Fáil TD Naoise Ó Cearúil's public assurance comes following the news that the government currently has no plans to open a new domestic violence refuge space in North Kildare next year.

That answer was given by Minister of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan TD, in response to a question which was submitted by Deputy Ó Cearúil.

Specifically, the Minister outlined plans to deliver new family refuge units and safe homes throughout Ireland by the end of 2026.

However, he also revealed to the Maynooth-based Deputy that North Kildare is not included in those plans.

Speaking further about the matter with the Leinster Leader, Deputy Ó Cearúil, who is based in Maynooth, said that Teach Tearmainn, an organisation which currently provides domestic violence support services for the entirety of Kildare, is currently looking for extra refuge spaces for the county.

"They have a refuge in Kildare town and an outreach centre in Naas," he added. "I'll be visiting them in Kildare town in January [of 2026] to work with them on securing more spaces, and seeing if there is a way of expanding the outreach service to the most populated part of the county in the North-East."

Anyone seeking to find out information about Teach Tearmainn can do so by visiting the organisation's official website.
