A councillor has called on Kildare County Council (KCC) to alleviate traffic which is "speeding" into one town's centre.

The matter was brought to KCC's attention at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Friday, November 7 last.

While in attendance at this meeting, Fianna Fáil Cllr Paul Ward motioned for KCC to undertake traffic calming measures on Church Street, Kilcock, in order to "help alleviate traffic speeding into Kilcock town centre, especially from the garda station onwards past the schools in the centre".

His motion was seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Donna Phelan.

Speaking further on his request, Cllr Ward claimed that the matter has been "raised consistently over the last number of years".

Responding to his motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The MD Office will conduct a speed survey in line with our Traffic Calming Guidelines to identify the need for traffic calming.

"If this shows there is an issue, then the MD Office will consider the options to help reduce traffic speeds coming into Kilcock past the An Garda Síochána station."

KCC also told Cllr Ward that it is "important to note" that there are no funding or resources available in 2025.

As such, this course of action would have to be considered for sometime next year instead.

Cllr Ward in turn told KCC: "I would like this to be put on the agenda for next year."

SPEED REVIEW

Directly after this motion was discussed, Cllr Ward also motioned for KCC to carry out speed review on Connaught Street, Kilcock, "near the train station to examine reports of excessive speeding in this area".

Once again, his motion was seconded by Cllr Phelan, the latter of whom also highlighted the presence of a "pinchpoint" in the region to KCC.

"A speed test to look at this issue would be greatly appreciated," she added.

In response, KCC told Cllr Ward that the MD engineer will arrange for a speed survey to be carried out on Connaught Street in the coming weeks.
