A councillor based in North Kildare has called on Irish Rail / Iarnród Éireann to "properly resource" Maynooth Train Station.
Labour Cllr Angela Feeney made the call earlier today (May 13), and claimed that she has raised "particular issues" that commuters have brought to her attention as a public representative regarding Irish Rail.
Explaining her stance, she said: "If we provide a quality properly resourced public transport system, people will use it; it’s a win-win situation.
"Everyone benefits and it helps to reduce emissions and get people out of their cars."
However, Cllr Feeney also claimed that the station master at Maynooth Train Station confirmed to her that the turnstile exit would not be reinstated.
"The turnstile exit at Maynooth Train Station is no longer available and it needs to be restored," she added.
Cllr Feeney argued that having the turnstile in operation would "double the exit capacity at the very busy station especially when the train station building is shut". She also voiced her belief that it would also increase safety at the station.
LEAP CARDS AND ACCESSIBILITY
Speaking further about her wishes for Maynooth Train Station, Cllr Feeney said: "More Leap Card validating machines also need to be provided.
"Since the introduction of fare changes last week, tagging off is even more important than ever as it could be well over €4 due to be refunded depending on the trip, so the lack of card validators needs to be addressed.
"I welcome the fact that works are ongoing to improve accessibility at Maynooth Train Station, as this will greatly improve access for wheelchair users, buggies, cyclists, and passengers with reduced mobility.
"The current footbridge at the station will be closed for approximately two months later this year to allow for the installation of the new accessible steel bridge."
She concluded: "I have asked Irish Rail to provide a timeline for these works, because commuters need to be made aware and are able to prepare for these changes to their commuter journey to the station."
In addition, Cllr Feeney claimed that she has contacted the communications manager at Irish Rail, Barry Kenny, in relation to these issues.
