The River Liffey in Straffan
There are no designated bathing areas in County Kildare.
However the country council is looking for the public to make submissions so that any locations can be identified as bathing areas.
KCC official Marian Higgins told a council meeting that strict criteria apply concerning the designation of bathing areas.
The council is seeking information about the use of the area, how many people avail of it and existence of facilities such as parking, toilets, signage and accessibility.
The council is also interested in issues such as safety and water quality.
She was responding to a call from Cllrs Tracey O’Dwyer and Evie Sammon for the council to outline which lakes and rivers in Kildare are designated areas.
They were also seeking information about how new areas are identified.
Cllr O'Dwyer said the council should make as many people as possible aware that this information is being sought.
