Kildare’s Cian O’Connor secures bronze for Team Ireland in London

Johnstown native Cian O’Connor today (Wednesday) claimed a bronze medal in the individual showjumping event at the London Olympics, writes Ruth Chambers.

Johnstown native Cian O’Connor today (Wednesday) claimed a bronze medal in the individual showjumping event at the London Olympics, writes Ruth Chambers.

O’Connor, on board Blue Lloyd 12 competed in against the Netherlands’ Gerco Schroder in a jump off to decided second and third place after the pair finished in joint second place after the final round.

The Dutch rider posted a faultless round in a time of 49.79 but O’Connor looked set to beat him with just a single fence to jump. However, the Kildare man clipped the final jump and incurred four penalty points leaving him in third place.

O’Connor’s third place finish brings Team Ireland’s medal haul up to four after Michael Conlon, John Joe Nevin and Katie Taylor already secured medals.
