RYSTON’S Dervla Duffy recently captured the Haringey Box Cup in London, beating Swedish opponent Helena Envall in the final, an event that was broadcast live on Sky TV, writes Ruth Chambers.
The final, an open class bout, saw the Newbridge woman dominate her plucky Scandinavian opponent. On route to the final Duffy got the better of tough German fighter Sandra Atanassow.
“I won the gold medal in the novice category here two years ago came back last year and won the gold at intermediate and I didn’t want to settle for anything but gold,” admitted Duffy.
Her big win in London prompted Irish coach Billy Walsh to include the Newbridge woman to include her in the team to face Tunisia in an Olympic warm up event last Friday.
Duffy was paired against Gim Jouini, a world championship bronze medalist. She went four rounds with the talented Tunisian and was delighted to get the experience of taking on such an accomplished boxer.
“I was really delighted with my performance. I never gave her any respect in there, my fitness was showing as the fight progressed and in the third and fourth round I felt like I was the Olympian,” added Duffy.
