KILDARE: No 'stop/go' traffic system for tricky railway bridge

A “stop-go” traffic light system is needed near a narrow railway bridge crossing outside Naas and Sallins.

But the request for an assessment of the bridge on the Kerdiffstown Road was rejected.

At the moment the site operates on a “courtesy/give way” system where road users give way or yield to oncoming traffic.

Kildare County council engineer Donal Hodgins said that this is the most appropriate method of traffic control at this rural location.

In a report he added: “The location can be assessed with a view to improving traffic flows/safety at the bridge with the current give way/yield system in place.”

But a signal operated one-way shuttle system, given the current traffic volumes, location of residential entrances, geometric layout of approaches/road widths is not recommended.

Cllr Kelly described the area as a back road and said much traffic is directed to use it by satellite technology and this will only increase once the public park opens on the former dump site in Kerdiffstown.

Cllr Fintan Brett supported KCC, observing that to change from the current method would cost a lot of money.
