Trial date set for man accused of 2001 murder of infant son in Kildare

The trial date was set before the Central Criminal Court

A date has been set for the trial of a 46-year-old man charged with murdering his infant son in Kildare some 18 years ago.

Yusuf Ali Abdi, with an address at Charleville Road, Phibsboro, Dublin 7 is charged with murdering 20-month-old Nathan Baraka Andrew Ali at The Elms, College Road, Clane, Co Kildare on April 17, 2001.

At the Central Criminal Court today, Monday, February 25, Mr Justice Michael White set a trial date for May 27 next. The case is due to last one week.

Earlier this month, Mr Abdi's original murder conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal. He had been found guilty of the murder and sentenced to life in 2003. However, the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction on the basis of that a 2013 diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, by a psychiatrist based at the Central Mental Hospital, was new evidence, rendering his conviction unsafe.
