A homeless man who was found with a five inch kitchen knife was jailed for four months at Naas District Court last Thursday, September 20.

He told gardai he was carrying it for his own protection.

Jordan Mahon (27), who gave an address at the Peter McVerry Trust in Newbridge, was before Naas District Court for the possession of the knife at Eyre Street, Newbridge, on 14 October 2017; at Patrick Street, Newbridge on 10 August 2017 and again at Main Street, Naas on 14 October 2017.

He was found with €20 worth of cannabis at Jane's Lane, Newbridge, and in a drunk and abusive state on Eyre Street in Newbridge.

Solicitor David Gibbons said his client came off the streets to live with his mother and was doing well but then disappeared back on the streets and was picked up by gardai on foot of a bench warrant.

In one incident he was found in possession of a utility knife and another time he was found with a five inch kitchen knife, the court heard.

He was convicted and sentenced to four months for the possession of a knife.
