Met Eireann has extended its Status Orange snow-ice warning for Kildare until 6pm this evening. Heavier than expected snows fell overnight in the county, and gardai are warning motorists to be careful on the roads today.
The weather service issued an updated warning, extending the Status Orange to Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath and Waterford. It said occasional heavy snow showers will continue and will lead to further accumulations and some drifting.
Motorways remain passable in Kildare, but rail services in the county, which were already operating on a Sunday service, have been hit.
Met Eireann has already warned that the bitterly cold weather is likely to continue into Bank Holiday Monday.
