Gardaí are asking motorists to avoid unnecessary journeys today.

Many roads remain impassable and local authorities are prioritising national routes.

“If you must travel and become stuck, contact emergencies services,” they said.

AA Roadwatch has described the road conditions in Kildare as treacherous. It said roads around Naas, Kildare Town, Leixlip and Athy are extremely poor and travel should not be attempted.

“In Newbridge, snow drifts are blocking numerous roads. Do not venture out. The Athy/Stradbally Rd (R428) and the Naas/Newbridge Rd (R445) are impassable,” it says.

It's also been reported that the R407 between Kilcock and Clane is also impassable. The Rathangan to Newbridge Road (via the Curragh) is blocked by snow drifts.
