Further information has been provided about a plan to provide 61 steel shipping container units at the premises of Euro Quality Cladding at the Monread Industrial Estate in Naas.

The company is based at the IDA Industrial Estate, Monread Road. Kildare County Council had asked the company to clarify if the proposed use is intended to support the primary activities of the company or if it will operate as a separate facility.

The company responded that this will be a separate enterprise “but is to be retained within the existing company’s structure” adding “the development is intended to make better economic use of the lands in support of the company”.

The company also said this may be extended, depending on the level of success.

Based on the company’s experience with its similar self storage facility in Wales, it is expected that the users will be 60% domestic and 40% commercial.

It will operate on a self service 24 hour/ 7 day week basis which will further reduce traffic volumes. It expects a total of 58 vehicle (commercial vans and cars) movements a week.

The applicant has also pointed out that the industrial estate already houses factories which operate on a 24 hour basis and this proposed type of development is neither within or is it close to a residential development and is considered acceptable for this reason.

A decision is due next month.
