An aunt of Kilcullen girl, Sarah Swaine, who passed away from cancer two years ago, is organising a fun run to raise funds for charity.

The Sarah Swaine Memorial Run/Walk takes place in Kilcullen on January 7 at 1pm.

“Canteen is our chosen charity and registration is online with pop up races or on the day from 11am,” explained Carrie Swaine.

“Sarah was just 19 when she passed away from cancer on January 7, 2015, and I wanted to do something in her memory. I talked to her parents about the idea of a fun run and I hope it will become an annual event.”

Carrie outlined how participants have the option of a 5km or a 10km route and people can either walk, jog or run.

“Canteen were very good to Sarah when she was sick. They are like the Share A Dream Foundation but they cater for teenagers. They bring them on trips and they even brought Sarah to Alton Towers — all that cost was €20 for the family. They were brilliant.”

Carrie said a special commemorative medal has also been designed up featuring a panda teddy to symbolise Sarah’s love of pandas.

“We are hugely grateful for all the support we have received. The local schools and organisations have been carrying out fundraisers. They have done a lot to help,” she said.

“We don’t have a target. We just want to raise as much as we can for Canteen Ireland,” she said.

The fun run will begin at 11am at the traffic lights in Kilcullen but people can register on the day at 11am.
