Just one officially listed derelict site in Naas

Cllr Sorcha O'Neill

There is one site in Naas on Kildare County Council’s list of derelict sites.

Independent councillor Sorcha O’Neill recently sought an ‘updated list of derelict buildings’ in the Naas area. Kildare County Council says that “within Naas Municipal District” there is currently one unnamed site on the Derelict Sites Register and eight new cases were reported in 2017.

The council said it seeks to “proactively engage with the owners of such sites to seek appropriate improvements.” and where this is not possible, statutory notices are issued in accordance with the legislation.

The council says it will — with the agreement of councillors — provide a behind-closed-doors briefing on the enforcement of derelict sites legislation.

The council can impose a levy on the owner of a derelict site that is listed on the register.

But the council did not respond to a question from Cllr O’Neill about whether a levy had been collected.

Naas Tidy Towns has said that the derelict Naas Shopping Centre should be on the list. The TT competition adjudicator’s report said the building does not do the NTT group “any favours”.
