Checkmate for Straffan again

What a week it has been for Straffan.

Last Friday they picked up a silver medal at the Entente Florale event in Brno, Czech Republic.

Then yesterday (Monday) they took top prize in the Co Kildare section of the Supervalu Tidy Town competition with 320 marks. The gold medal winning position saw them improve by three marks on the 2015 results.

Spokesperson, Rose Donovan, said its was their 10th county win.

Naas had 318 points, up four from 2015. 

Rathangan, in Category C with Straffan, won a silver medal and was commended for its work in getting 315 points. 

Kill with 314 points also won a silver medal and Ballymore Eustace (311) won bronze.

Clane, with 299 points, five up on last year, won a bronze medal and topped Category E.

Maynooth saw its mark rise from 305 in 2015, to 314 this year, a very good national performance.

In addition it was rewarded in the Let’s Get Buzzing Local Authority Pollinators award.

Naas was highly commended.

There were silver medals for Newbridge, Celbridge and Leixlip, awarded on the basis of proximity to national winners.

Carbury was recognised with an Endeavour award. It saw its mark rise by a very high 4%, going from 240 last year to 250 this year.

At an individual level, Joan Kerr, of Kill Tidy Towns was recognised as a Tidy Town Hero and local retailer, Fergus Reilly was also named in the final line up.
