A Kildare county councillor has called for a new pedestrian crossing to be installed in Carton Avenue, Maynooth.
At the recent Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which was held on Friday, September 6 last, Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney called on Kildare County Council (KCC) to install a push-button pedestrian crossing at the end of Carton Avenue.
She said that installing the crossing in order would 'make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road and continue their route into Carton Demesne.'
Cllr Feeney elaborated: "This is a very popular walk for many people, they walk down Carton Avenue to access Carton Demesne but to cross the road has become increasingly difficult and dangerous.
"Crossing that very busy stretch of road would be much safer if a push button pedestrian crossing was installed. like I suggested on another road recently, at the Maynooth Town Football Club."
She continued: "The stretch of road in question has become busier than ever, it is a straight stretch of road and when the Maynooth Eastern Ring Road opens, it will only get busier.
"We are all in favour of active travel, but we need to make sure it is safe for everyone when they are out and about.
"Many residents have been in touch with me calling for this measure and this is why I brought the motion to the meeting.
"“I am pleased that KCC has responded favourably to my proposal; we now need to allocate funding to make it a reality."
Cllr Feeney suggested that Local Property Tax (LPT) be allocated to the project, which is what happened with the other pedestrian crossing at the Football Club: "This is good use of LPT in my mind, and when we are having our discussions on allocations of LPT for projects, and I will certainly be putting this forward for funding."
