Aoife Breslin is congratulated by Mark Wall
The first count is in for Athy with Cllr Aoife Breslin (Lab) topping the poll with a massive 2,347 votes, followed by Cllr Ivan Keatley (FG) with 1,638.
The sitting councillor exceeded the surplus and was elected. The count continues with Cllr Brian Dooley (FF) on 1,076 votes. It looks like the fourth seat will be between Cllr Veralouise Behan (FF) and William Carton (Ind Ireland). Cllr Behan is ahead of Carton by just 64 votes. Labours Mark Leigh is next with 732 followed by Thomas Redmond (SF) with 537 votes.
There are five seats in the Athy Electoral Area.
Cllr Breslin said; "I am deeply privileged and humbled. It's not just about me, it's about my family, my friends, the people of Athy. It's about all the people who worked so hard for me. The people of Athy have decided to put their faith in me and I will work my hardest for them for the next five years. It's a great day for Athy."
She said it was a strong result for the party in South Kildare.
The second count is now underway with Cllr Keatley just 20 votes from being elected.
