Gardaí stop car near Kildare-Dublin border before uncovering major drugs haul

Gardaí in Dublin have seized almost €500,000 worth of cannabis after searching a car and house in the capital on Wednesday.

As part of Operation Tara, Gardaí in Tallaght stopped a vehicle on Cheeverstown Road, Tallaght and in a separate incident conducted a planned search under warrant at a residential property in Tallaght.

In a statement, gardaí said: "At approximately 8pm, last night, gardaí attached to the Serious Crime Unit at Tallaght Garda station stopped and searched a vehicle on Cheeverstown Road, Tallaght. During the course of the search cannabis herb with an estimated value of €100,000 (analysis pending) was seized."

They confirmed a woman in her 40s and a man in his late teens were arrested at the scene and taken to a Garda station in South Dublin.

"Both are currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996," gardaí have said.

The statement continued: "At approximately 9.30pm, a search operation under warrant was conducted by the Tallaght District Drug unit of a residential property in Tallaght. During the course of the search cannabis resin with an estimated street value of €378,000 (analysis pending) was seized.

"One man, aged in his 40s was arrested at the scene and taken to a Garda station in South Dublin. He is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996."

The seized drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis.

Investigations are ongoing.
