The well-known Kildare figures have signed up to the Newbridge For All group.

Singers Christy Moore and Luka Bloom, as well as radio DJ and comedian Keith Walsh, are among those lending support to a community group based in Newbridge.

Newbridge For All (NFA) is a group that advocates for integration and community spirit within Newbridge.

The news follows the announcement from last week that 100 male International Protection Applicants (IPAs), also known as asylum seekers, are due to be accommodated at the former Gables B&B in the town.

It also follows a meeting which saw concerned locals gather outside the Gables on the morning of Sunday, September 24 last.

The NFA said in its latest statement: "In Newbridge, we pride ourselves on being welcoming and caring.

"We make friends quickly with newcomers and know that our community is strong and unified."

The group continued: "However, there are some who want to divide us by spreading fear about where we come from or the colour of our skin; they want us to turn on each other and and distract us with their lies and hate.

"Why? Because they have nothing else to offer."

Referring to IPAs, NFA also said: "Whether we have lived in Newbridge for all our lives, or come here seeking safety, we all just want to be safe and have a decent life.

"There are ongoing issues in our town around access to basic facilities and proper infrastructure; that is why we need to work together with relevant bodies for homes that we can all afford and decent jobs so we can care for our families.

"We need to campaign for more schools, better bus and train services, healthcare, more youth facilities and sports clubs, and all the things we need to build strong, diverse communities of equals.

"This community pulls together and leaves nobody behind."
