One of the top private schools in the country has been granted permission for a €2.5m arts building development.

Clongowes Wood College near Clane in Co Kildare has been given approval by Kildare County Council to construct the facility in two phases over a ten year period.

Clongowes is among the most expensive boarding schools in the country and charges over €21,000 a year in fees for seven-day boarders.

The new arts facility will include a two-storey, double-height building to accommodate a multi-purpose music and drama rehearsal space, two classrooms, music tuition rooms and a multi-media recording studio.

Also in the plans is a one-storey, double-height theatre building with auditoriums and backstage dressing room facilities.

An entrance and reception area is also in the plans, according to Building Information Ireland database.

The development also consists of a landscaped courtyard.

Earlier this year, Clongowes was granted permission to build nine new houses on its grounds.

The €2m development is earmarked for a new Jesuit community as well as residential accommodation for Clongowes Wood College staff.
