The annual Jamie ‘Smiley’ Donohoe Golf Classic has raised €5,500 for charity and brings the total haul for various good causes over the past 16 years to in excess of €50,000.
The event was held at Newbridge Golf Club on June 3. The cheque presentation was made on Sunday, July 9 on what would have been Jamie’s 33rd birthday weekend.
The chosen charity was the Patrician Brothers School Newbridge Breakfast Club.
Jamie was a student at the school at the time of his passing and it has been a strong supporter of the golf classic.
The breakfast club runs every morning from 8am to 8.45am. All students are invited and it helps to make sure that everyone gets a decent start to their day and are not going hungry.
Numbers can vary each day, but on average up to 200 students avail of this on any given day.
Jamie died on March 10 2007 in a tragic car accident when he was just 16 years old. His family explain how he was known as Smiley to all who knew him because of his happy demeanour — he was never without a smile.
On Jamie’s first anniversary his family ran a one-off golf memorial in his memory with the proceeds going to St Brigid’s Hospice. The event was a great success. The Donohoe family would like to thank everyone who supported this year’s event and acknowledge that without this continued and generous support this event would not be success it is.
