KILDARE CAR REVIEW: Renault Megane E-Tech - an innovative EV experience

The all-new Renault Megane E-Tech electric is the first of a new generation of electric vehicles (EVs) built on the advanced CMF-EV platform, styled within the brand’s ‘sensual tech’ design language, and the first model to wear the new ‘Nouvel R’ logo.

With an electric driving range of up to 450km (WLTP), the Megane E-Tech electric also features a class-leading digital experience with a 12.3-inch dashboard display, 9-inch multimedia display, and Android Automotive OS with integrated Google services.

With up to 26 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features available across the range, the Megane E-Tech also has a 5 star NCAP rating.

Two Battery and Three Trim Options

The Megane E-Tech electric is available with a 40kWh battery that provides up to 300km of driving range, a 130hp electric motor, and 85kW DC charging, along with a 60kWh battery option that has a 450km range, a 220hp electric motor and 130kW DC charging capability as standard.

Three trim lines are available: Equilibre, Techno and Launch Edition — all of which are available with the 60kW battery, with the 40kW battery only available in Equilibre and Techno versions.

Standard specification across all trim levels include a hands-free keycard with keyless entry, full LED headlights, automatic daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, rear view camera, auto-tilting ad folding door mirrors, paddle shift levers for regenerative braking, rear window and door child locking system, e-call: automatic emergency assist, distance warning alert, traffic sign recognition, multiple airbags with deactivation functionality, fabric upper dashboard, high centre console with sliding armrest and storage, dual zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, 9-inch multimedia OpenR link screen, 12.3-inch driver information display cluster, and 2 front and rear c-type USB ports, along with many more comfort, convenience, safety and connectivity features. Also standard are stylish 18-inch (Equilibre) or 20-inch (Techno and Launch Edition) alloy wheels.

Improved Internal Space

Optimised weight distribution, a longer wheelbase, a fully flat floor and a low centre of gravity give the car greater agility and improved internal spaciousness.

Weighing in at 1620kg, the Megane E-Tech electric is one of the lightest vehicles in its class. On board, a system automatically regulates the battery and motor temperature.

As a result, drivers will enjoy increased driving range from equivalent power regardless of the outside temperature. Innovative aerodynamics also help to increase driving range.

The car’s contained height, coupe style roof, narrow-side tyres, and sculpted bumpers are structural features that boost its efficiency.

Megane E-Tech 60kWh versions are capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in just 7.5 seconds, but are also capable of remarkable efficiency, consuming just 16.1 kWh per 100km.

The battery is just as innovative. At only 110 mm — 40% smaller than the Zoe battery — it is the thinnest on the market, meaning the centre of gravity is lower, and the car is more agile.

Charging the car from 0-100% via a domestic wallbox charger will take just over 9 hours to complete.

Unprecedented Connectivity

Powered by the latest-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, the high-resolution 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster combines with the 9-inch OpenR infotainment display to deliver an unprecedented connected experience. Google’s Android Automotive OS provides access to Google Maps and Google Assistant as well as a host of applications offered through the Google Play store.

Test Car Details

My Megane E-Tech Techno 60kW test car was finished in delightful Shadow Grey metallic paint with a Diamond Black metallic roof and door mirror casings for maximum visual impact. As you approach the car, the new Renault logo lights up and illuminates the ground, while the flush door handles slide out to enable easy access.

The interior space is fashionably uncluttered, and innovative materials enhance the overall look within the cabin, with recycled materials used for the upholstery and door panels.

Seven litres of storage space between the front seats keeps smartphones and personal belongings within easy reach.

Boot space in the Megane E-Tech electric measures in at 440-litres behind the rear seats, with up to 1.332-litres available when the rear seats are folded down.

Thanks to Renault’s slim battery, the floor is low and wide for greater accessibility. The car’s steering is suitably light and responsive, while body control is commendable through tight corners. Driving the Megane E-Tech electric on city streets is a simple exercise, and at higher speeds the car continues to be relaxing for all occupants, as the cabin remains well insulated from road and wind noise.

A well-judged suspension set-up ensures that road imperfections are soaked up with ease, while the car’s overall driving dynamics are admirable.

Motorway driving is made easy by the provision of plenty of mid-range punch from the electric motor, allowing for the safe and predictable overtaking of slower moving traffic.

Verdict and Pricing

The new Renault Megane E-Tech is a well-rounded family car in every respect, and it is a stylish, spacious and practical mode of emission-free transport for up to five occupants.

Pricing starts at €37,495 (inclusive of VRT relief and an SEAI Grant of €3,500 for private buyers).

A 5-year/150,000km warranty comes as standard, along with a 5-year roadside assistance package and an 8-year battery warranty.
