KILDARE ARTS SCENE: Kill Musical and Dramatic Society present Playboy of Western World

Kill Musical and Dramatic Society are delighted to bring John Millington Synge’s classic play “The Playboy of the Western World”, to St Brigid’s Church Hall, Kill from June 6 to 9 at 8pm.

This iconic and humorous drama is set in a pub in western Ireland in the early 1900s. The play tells the story of a young man who attains a hero-like status among the local villagers by telling a rousing story about having murdered his father.

The society are delighted to welcome back Stephen Fagan as director, having co-directed their production of “The Sound of Music” earlier this year in partnership with Philippa Alford (RIP) who the society remembers with much love.

James Place plays the rugged and handsome title role of “The Playboy” Christopher Mahon, in this his first time to perform with Kill MDS.

Pegeen Mike, the publican’s daughter, a headstrong woman, and the object of Christopher’s affections, is played by Grace McCarthy in her first leading role with the Society, following on from her previous appearances in “The Sound of Music” and the one-act play “Hall of Healing”.

Christopher’s father, Old Mahon is played by Damien Donegan, a regular on the stage in Kill, while Michael James Flaherty, a respected publican in whose pub the play is set and who enjoys his own supply as much as his customers do, is played by Tom McCarthy, also no stranger to the stage in Kill,

Shawn Keogh, the intended of Pegeen Mike, a nervous wreck and the butt of every joke from the lads in the bar, is played by Adam Pamplin, another Kill MDS regular.

Following on from her recent appearance as Claire in “Boston Marriage” at The Moat Theatre, Rossagh Cusack, another society regular, plays the part of Widow Quin, a feisty match to Pegeen.

Philly Cullen and Jimmy Farrell, regulars in Michael Flaherty’s licensed premises, are played by long-time Naas Musical Society member, Shane Byrne and Kill regular Pat Lalor.

Sara Tansy (played by Alanna Keane) Susan Brady (played by Leonna Condron who also joins Kill MDS for the first time) and Honor Blake (played by Lorna Stenson) are the town girls obsessed with the idea of a new dashing man in the local area.

All are invited to come along 6th – 9th June and enjoy what is sure to be a compelling evening of drama in Kill. Tickets are available on www.gr8events.ie (€15/€12 plus booking fee)

Following its run in Kill, the Society will bring the “The Playboy of the Western World” to The Moat Theatre for two additional performances on 29 and 30 June.
